RO, UV or UF: Which Water Purifier Does Your Home Actually Need?

Every purifier showroom throws the same three letters at you — RO, UV, UF — and most buyers end up choosing by price instead of by water. That is backwards. Your water source decides the technology; the budget only decides the model.

What each one actually does

• RO (Reverse Osmosis): pushes water through a fine membrane and removes dissolved salts, hardness and heavy metals. This is the one that lowers TDS. It needs electricity and wastes some water.
• UV (Ultraviolet): a lamp kills bacteria and viruses but changes nothing else — dissolved salts, hardness and taste stay exactly as they were. Needs electricity.
• UF (Ultra Filtration): a physical membrane that blocks bacteria, cysts and visible dirt. Works without electricity, but does not touch dissolved salts.

Let your water source choose

• Borewell or hard water, where vessels scale up and soap does not lather: you need RO. UV alone will give you germ-free hard water.
• Municipal supply that is soft but not always clean: RO+UV or UV+UF is usually plenty.
• Water that is visibly muddy in the monsoon: put a sediment pre-filter ahead of whatever you buy, or the main filters clog within weeks.
• Frequent power cuts and reasonably soft water: a UF purifier keeps working when the electricity does not.

Storage tank size

Between six and eight litres suits a family of four in a home with a steady supply. Go bigger — ten litres or more — if power cuts are frequent, the household is larger, or you fill bottles for the whole family in the morning. A bigger tank costs little extra and saves you waiting.

The part people forget: servicing

A purifier is not a one-time purchase; it is a filter subscription with a machine attached. Sediment and carbon filters are typically changed every six to twelve months, and the RO membrane runs longer but not forever — how long depends entirely on your input water. A purifier whose filters are never changed eventually delivers worse water than the tap.

• Ask what the filter set costs before you buy the machine, not after.
• Confirm that filters and membranes are available locally.
• Note the installation date somewhere you will see it, so the first service does not slip by.
• Slower flow, a change in taste, or a purifier that runs constantly are all signs that a filter is due.
