Instant vs Storage Geyser: Picking the Right Water Heater

Winters in Chhattisgarh are short but sharp, and a wrongly sized geyser shows up on the electricity bill for years. The choice is simpler than the showroom makes it sound.

Instant water heater (3L – 6L)

• Heats water on demand within seconds — no waiting, no stored tank.
• Best for a kitchen sink, a wash basin, or a bucket bath in a small bathroom.
• Compact, cheaper to buy, and fine for one or two people.
• Not suited to a shower: it cannot keep up with a continuous hot flow.

Storage geyser (10L – 25L)

• Heats a tankful and keeps it hot, so several people can bathe one after another.
• The right choice for showers and for families.
• Takes wall space and a few minutes to heat up the first time each morning.
• Better insulation means less reheating — this is where the star rating earns its money.

What size for your bathroom

• 3L instant: kitchen sink or basin, single user, bucket only.
• 10L – 15L storage: the standard for a family of three or four taking bucket baths.
• 15L: also the practical minimum if anyone uses a shower.
• 25L: large families, back-to-back showers, or a bathtub.

Safety features you should insist on

2. 2Thermostat and a separate thermal cut-out so the element switches off at the set temperature.
3. 3ISI mark and a proper earthing connection at the point where it is installed.
4. 4Glass-lined or otherwise coated tank plus a magnesium anode rod, which protects the tank from hard water. Ask whether the anode is replaceable.

Running it without a shock on the bill

• Switch on 15–20 minutes before the bath, not at dawn for the whole morning.
• Set the thermostat to a medium setting instead of maximum — hotter water only means more cold water mixed in later.
• Turn it off after use. Leaving a storage geyser on all day is the single biggest waste.
• Get the tank flushed periodically if your water is hard; sediment at the bottom makes the element work harder every day.
• Do not ignore a dripping safety valve — it is telling you something.
