Glass Top vs Stainless Steel Gas Stove: Which Should You Buy?

A gas stove is a ten-year purchase in most Indian homes, so the choice is worth ten minutes of thought. Three decisions matter: the top material, the burner count, and the burner metal. Everything else is finish.

• Wipes clean in seconds — spills sit on the surface instead of running into seams.

• Toughened glass is heat-resistant, but it is still glass: a heavy steel kadai dropped on the edge can crack it.

Stainless steel top

• Takes rough daily use — heavy vessels, hard scrubbing, a busy kitchen.
• Cannot crack, so it is the safer choice in a home with children or a joint family kitchen.
• Needs more cleaning effort; oil settles around the burner rims and shows water marks.

Brass burners are worth the difference

Brass burners hold heat evenly and survive years of flame better than aluminium alloy. They cost a little more and need occasional cleaning to keep the ports clear, but they are the part that decides how your stove performs in year five. Look for solid brass, not brass-coated.
